The William Joiner Center and its collaborative institutions and programs at the University of Massachusetts Boston are pleased to announce the selection of the Rockefeller Fellows in the Humanities for the academic year 2001-2002 in the initiative “(Re)Constructing Identity and Place in the Vietnamese Diaspora”. This initiative is the result of the collaboration of several university institutes, departments and programs, including the Asian American Studies Program, the East Asian Studies Program, the Institute for Asian American Studies, the Coalition for Asian-Pacific American Youth and the Graduate School of Education. For the academic year 2001-2002, we are happy to announce the appointment of seven fellows - Ms. Karin Aguilar-San Juan, Mr. Henry Nguyen Huu Liem, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, Ms. Trin Yarborough, Mr. Dang Tien, Mr. Do Quyen, and Mr. Ta Chi Dai Truong. Ms. Karin Aguilar-San Juan, a professor of Comparative North American Studies Program at Macalester College, will study various aspects of the community building process of the Vietnamese American community in Boston. Mr. Henry Nguyen Huu Liem, editor-in-chief of TRIET (A Vietnamese Journal of Philosophies and Ideas, 1996-98) and current Philosophy Instructor at San Jose City College, will work on two chapters of his book “The Prescriptive Language of New Identities: A Philosophical Investigation.” Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, Education Instructor at the College of Education, UMASS Boston will investigate the classical dilemma facing every Vietnamese refugee family: “How can we preserve the traditional order in the family and in society, yet let our children have rooms for critical and creative thinking ?” Ms. Trin Yarborough, a journalist, will use her residency to complete her ongoing non-fiction book - “Surviving Twice,” a study of the Vietnamese Amerasians. Mr. Dang Tien, a leading literary critic of Vietnamese literature, will complete his long-term project of an overview of Vietnamese Overseas Poetry 1975-2000 from the vantage of a Paris observer. Mr. Do Quyen, another well known critic who currently resides in Canada, will study the major themes of the Diaspora through a series of past and present interviews with prominent figures from all sides of the conflict. Mr. Ta Chi Dai Truong, one of the most respected historians of our time, will examine how Vietnamese history has been consistently distorted by external factors and propose a new way to look at Vietnamese History - “Vietnamese History Through a
Vietnamese Lense: A Different Perspectivee.This year the Standing Committee had many outstanding applications.
